Abstract Out of order arrival of packets is an inevitable phenomenon on the Internet. Application performance can degrade to a great extent due to out-of-order arrival of packets. Metrics to characterize the degree of re-ordering will promote the evaluation of network protocols with respect to packet reordering as well as provide a uniformly defined quantitative measure for packet reordering. We define the concept of “reorder density function” (RD), which quantitatively measures the degree of reordering in sequences of packets. While the reorder density function can provide a comprehensive picture on reordering, measures such as mean and median of reorder density can be used when simpler metrics are desired. Results of reordering analysis using the above metrics for TCP and UDP based applications under different network conditions are presented.

RFC 5236 Improved Packet
This document presents two improved metrics for packet reordering, namely, Reorder Density (RD) and Reorder Buffer-occupancy Density (RBD). A threshold is used to clearly define when a packet is considered lost, to bound computational complexity at O(N), and to keep the memory requirement for evaluation independent of N, where N is the length of the packet sequence. RD is a comprehensive metric...

متن کاملAn optical burst reordering model for time-based and random selection assembly strategies
Contention resolution schemes in optical burst switched networks (OBS) as well as contention avoidance schemes delay burst delivery and change the burst arrival sequence. The burst arrival sequence usually changes the packet arrival sequence and degrades the upper layer protocols performance, e.g., the throughput of the transmission control protocol (TCP). In this paper, we present and analyze ...
متن کاملRFC 4737 Packet
This memo defines metrics to evaluate whether a network has maintained packet order on a packet-by-packet basis. It provides motivations for the new metrics and discusses the measurement issues, including the context information required for all metrics. The memo first defines a reordered singleton, and then uses it as the basis for sample metrics to quantify the extent of reordering in several...
